Percy Jackson and the Olympians series portraits an 11 –year old, Percy finds out he is a Greek demi-god son of Poseidon, the God the sea. When he finds out he is transported to Camp Half-Blood, a safe place for demi-gods like him, along with his protector, Grover underwood who is a satyr meaning half man and half goat. Percy embarks on his first quest along with Annabeth Chase and Grover to retrieve the most powerful weapon made, Zeus’s lightning bolt.

At the end of the first book, Percy is backstabbed by Luke, Percy’s so called ‘Friend’ and turns out Luke works for Kronos, the king of the Titans, and he ends up being the antagonist in this series. Kronos and his unruly army of monsters and backstabbing demigods try to make the Gods of Olympus fall and take over the throne and their power to control and wreak havoc in the world.

This series is highly recommended to tweens and teens but many adults have also enjoyed this fun-filled middle-grade series. This series has also portrayed its characters to be many children’s role models and in my personal experience, it became my happy place, a place where I could escape reality and problems of the real world and I believe that may be the same for other readers of this fandom. The first book (The lightning thief) has also received the Hampshire book award and has sold over 15 million copies.

‘Witty and inspired. Gripping, touching and deliciously satirical’ – Amanda Craig, The Times
